“Ni siquiera" is an expression we use to say that the bare minimum is not there.

Example: "I don't even have milk in the fridge." / "The child is not literate; he doesn't even know how to write his name."

Speak Spanish BA is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

It is composed of the word "ni", which is usually used for double negation: "I don't drink mate or coffee" / "Neither Juan nor Pedro can come to work tomorrow."

Or to emphasize a negation: "No idea."

And the word "siquiera", which means at least, at the very least, even just.

"Can you at least say thank you?" / "I need to sleep at least an hour."
