How to Ask Questions in Spanish

The correct ways to use "Cuál" vs. "Qué" and other tips on asking question.

Now it is time to learn how to ask questions in Spanish. Let’s take a look at a few words that are associated with asking questions.

• Quién, Quienes (Who): In Spanish we have a singular and a plural word for “who”, and it depends if you are expecting one name as the answer or more than one. Ex: ¿Quién está en la cocina? Mi papá está en la cocina. ¿Quiénes son tus amigos? Marcos, Luis y Franco son mis amigos.

• De quién (Whose): It is a question that we use to know who owns something. ¿De quién es ese perro? Es de Martina.

• Dónde (Where): ¿Dónde está Barcelona? Barcelona está en España.

• De dónde (From where): We use it to ask about the origin of something or someone´s nationality. ¿De dónde es el sushi? El sushi es de Japón. (or “el sushi es japonés.”)

• Cómo (How): ¿Cómo habla español Natalie Portman? Ella habla muy bien español.

• Qué (What): ¿Qué es el chimichurri? Es una salsa Argentina que usamos en carne y choripanes. ¿Qué música te gusta? Me gusta el tango.

• Cuál-cuáles (Which): ¿Cuál es tu película favorita? Mi película favorita es Toy Story. ¿Cuáles son tus ciudades favoritas? Mis ciudades favoritas son Buenos Aires y Cuzco.

• Cuándo (When): ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? Mi cumpleaños es el 11 de mayo.

• Por qué (Why): ¿Por qué estudiás español? Estudio español porque en mi trabajo necesito hablar otro idioma.

Qué vs. Cuál

There is always a lot of confusion around the difference between “qué” and “cuál” because, in English, we can ask, for example, “What is your name?” and not in Spanish. In Spanish we can say “Cual es tu nombre”, which in English would be “Which is your name?”, not “what is your name?”.

Qué es: the question “qué es” is used to ask for a definition. For example: ¿Qué es un perro? Un perro es un animal con cuatro patas  y una cola. ¿Qué es “locro”? Locro es una comida típica de Argentina.

• Cuál es: the question “cuál es” implies a “selection” within a group. ¿Cuál es la capital de Italia? (Since there are tons of capitals in the world, you have to pick one) La capital de Italia es Roma. ¿Cuál es tu película favorita? Mi película favorita es “El Padrino”.

• You can also use “qué” for a selection, but in that case, you will need the noun after it.

• ¿Qué gaseosa (soda) preferís? Prefiero Seven Up.
