"Acabo de desayunar": qué son las "perífrasis verbales"

Existen algunos grupos de palabras que juntas forman una idea, son las perífrasis verbales. Por ejemplo: “tener que + infinitivo” me da idea de obligación, “verbo ir en presente + a + infinitivo” me da idea de futuro.

Vamos a ver algunos y poner ejemplos:

There are some groups of words that, together, form an idea; these are called verbal periphrases. For example, 'to have to' + infinitive gives me a sense of obligation, while 'to go' (in the present) + 'to' + infinitive gives me a sense of the future.

Let's look at a few and provide examples:

• Dejar de + infinitivo (quit, stop doing something)= dejé de fumar (I stopped smoking, I quit smoking).

  Algo que hacía y no hago más. (Something that I used to do and I don’t do anymore).

• Seguir (conjugado en presente) + Gerundio (Still, keep doing something)= sigo viviendo con mis padres (I still live with my parents).

  Algo que hacía en el pasado y continúa igual en presente. (Something I used to do in the past and still do in the present.)

• Volver (pasado) + a + infinitivo (to do something again) = volví a jugar al hockey después de 10 años (I started playing hockey again after 10 years.).

  Algo que hacía, dejé de hacer por un tiempo, y estoy haciendo otra vez. (Something that I used to do, I quit for some time, and now i am doing that again).

• Llevar (presente) + tiempo + Gerundio (It is the time that you have been doing something) = llevo 5 años tocando la batería. (I have been playing drums for 5 years)

  Es el tiempo que has estado haciendo algo ininterrumpidamente. (It's the time you've been doing something without interruption.)

• Llevar (presente) + tiempo + sin + Infinitivo (It's the time you've been without doing an activity.) = llevó 3 meses sin fumar (I have gone three months without smoking.)

  Es el tiempo que has estado sin hacer una actividad. (It's the time you've been without doing an activity.)

• Acabar de (presente) + Infinitivo (I just did something) = acabo de cenar (I just ate dinner).

  Es una acción que hiciste recién (hace un momento). Aunque la idea está en pasado vamos a usar presente. (It's an action you just did a moment ago. Although the idea is in the past, we're going to use the present.)

• Empezar a + infinitivo (To start doing something)= empecé a estudiar francés hace 2 meses. (I started to study French 2 months ago)

  Es el inicio de una acción. (It is the beginning of an action)

• Hacer + tiempo + que + presente = acción que empezó y continua (An action that has started and continue in the present).

  Ej= hace 2 años que hago yoga. (I have been practicing Yoga for 2 years).

  Es el tiempo que ha pasado desde el comienzo de una acción. Esa acción continúa en presente. (It's the time that has passed since the beginning of an action. That action continues in the present).

• Hacer + tiempo + pasado (ago) = Es una acción que terminó. Contamos cuánto tiempo pasó desde que terminó esa acción hasta el presente. Siempre hablamos de “duración”. (It's an action that has ended. We count how much time has passed since that action ended until the present. We always talk about 'duration.')

  Ejemplo= Hace 2 días que llegué a México. (I arrived to Mexico 2 days ago).

• Desde(Since) + que +  (verbo conjugado) - fecha -  sustantivo - hace (tiempo) + vb presente + Edad (age).

  Es el punto de inicio de una acción que continúa en presente. Es un punto en el tiempo, no se trata de la duración. (It's the starting point of an action that continues in the present. It's a point in time, not about duration).

  Ejemplos=

Estoy más gordo desde que me casé (I have gained weight since I got married.)

Estoy más gordo desde mayo (I have gained weight since may.)

Estoy más gordo desde mi graduación (I have gained weight since my graduation.)

Estoy más gordo desde hace 2 meses (I have gained weight for the past two months.)

Fumo desde que trabajo en este proyecto (I have been smoking since I started working on this project.)

Fumo desde los 18 años (I have been smoking since I was 18 years old.)
